On the calendar in our kitchen, yesterday’s date was marked as “National Day of Prayer.” In February, I received a “Special Update from George Verwer” in which he thanked Lawrence Tong for mobilizing prayer for him and his wife, Drena. Brother George wrote: “You can share with the OM family that I have a large growth near my abdomen which is a Sarcoma Cancer … Please ask people not to pray for total healing as I really am looking forward to heaven. Ask prayer for grace for the rough journey that daily will be ahead.” That journey ended on April 14th, when the Lord called George home.
Brother George trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour after a lady prayed for him in his high school in New Jersey. George went forward when Billy Graham gave an invitation to receive Christ at Madison Square Garden in New York City in March 1955. Not long after I trusted Christ as my personal Saviour, I read George’s book “Come, Live, Die!” which had a deep impact on my life. After studying at Concordia University in Montreal, I went with Operation Mobilization to France and England for fourteen months. I had the privilege of meeting Brother George and his wife and family, as well as many brothers and sisters in Christ, who were committed to pray for the salvation of the lost and the spiritual growth of believers.
I am grateful to the Lord for Ed and George, who encouraged me in the Lord. I am also thankful for all who pray for Karen and me. There are two ladies – Carole and Lise – who pray for the Quebec radio ministry faithfully and I would ask that you please pray for them, as they face health challenges.
Scripture for the weekend: “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NASB)
