It’s a new month and a good time to reflect on what the Lord has done in the past and what He will do in the future. I am thankful for dedicated servants who proclaim the truths of God’s Word. One pastor who has helped me understand Biblical teachings is Dr. David Jeremiah, who sends a magazine called “Turning Points.” In the November 2024 edition, there is an article entitled “Discovering Treasures in Time – A Life Worth Living.” Dr. Jeremiah writes: “The Rosetta Stone is among the most famous objects in the British Museum. It was inscribed about two hundred years before Christ and discovered in 1799 near Rosetta, Egypt, in the Nile Delta. The soldiers who unearthed the treasure were a French troop of Napoleon’s. Shortly afterward, the British defeated the French, and the Rosetta Stone ended up in London. Since 1802, this cultural treasure has been on continuous public display in the British Museum.
But Egypt would like its stone back! About three miles from the British Museum, you can see another famous stone – the 105.6 carat Koh-i-Noor diamond, which is housed in the Jewel House at the Tower of London. It’s from India and was given to Queen Victoria during the British occupation of that country in the 1800s.
India, too, wants its stone back!”
Dr. Jeremiah observes: “As Christians, we appreciate valuable museum pieces that help tell the story of human history. But we also know that none of these objects – regardless of their value – will survive into eternity … The treasures of time may be precious, but we have timeless treasures that should preoccupy us far more than the Rosetta Stone or the Koh-i-Noor diamond. We need to find them in time! The treasures of God are vast, generous, and eternal. These are treasures that neither moth nor rust can destroy, and when we value them above all else, we discover a life that’s worth living,”
Last week, we looked at what the author to the Hebrews wrote about “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith,” today we are considering the treasures of God, and tomorrow, should the Lord tarry, we will rejoice in knowing that the Lord loves us with an everlasting love.
Dr. Jeremiah notes: “Let’s begin with the Lord Himself. He is our greatest treasure. The prophet Isaiah wrote, ‘The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with his justice and righteousness. He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure’ (Isaiah 33:5-6, NIV).
The Bible says that in Christ Himself ‘are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge’ (Colossians 2:3).”
Should the Lord tarry, we will examine more truths from God’s Word next week. Until then, let’s meditate on what the Lord Jesus said in the “Scripture for the weekend.”
