Earlier this week, Karen and I were going to an appointment in Montreal and crossed the Jacques Cartier bridge, overlooking the site where the world’s fair was held in the summer of 1967, which was the centennial year of the confederation of Canada. You can read about this at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expo_67 So much has changed since then, including the development of the World Wide Web, giving us access to lots of information and enabling us to communicate with people around the world.

In the spring of 1967, I won a trip to Toronto to see the Monkees and took my first airplane ride before going to the arena where the show was held. I used to ride my bicycle a few kilometres to get a weekly ‘Hit Chart’ of the most popular songs that Dave Boxer played on a Montreal radio station. Do any of you remember that? If so, I’d love to hear from you.

After the world’s fair ended, some of the pavilions remained open, including the “Sermons from Science” pavilion, where the wonders of God’s creation were shown in films, followed by a presentation of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am so grateful for men like Jim Yorgey, who came from the United States to share the love of Christ with those who went to this pavilion. Brother Jim patiently corrected the lessons that I began following from this ministry in 1969. I was not in a hurry to complete the four-lesson series, but when I got to the fourth lesson in January 1973, I knew that I could not return it until I had asked God’s forgiveness for my sins.

A brother in Christ sent me an email yesterday with the following reflections by George Worthy: “On January 1st 1863, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which proclaimed freedom for all slaves in the ten states which were in rebellion. At the time, when U.S. Secretary of State Seward took the document to the President to sign, Lincoln took a pen, and held it for a moment. He then removed his hand and dropped his pen. Lincoln turned to Seward and said, “I have been shaking hands since nine o’clock this morning and my right arm is almost paralyzed. If my name ever goes into history, it will be for this act, and my whole soul is in it.”

While untold millions have been waiting for the promised return of our Messiah for centuries– the one sign they lacked was the restoration of Israel. Through all those past generations it was only in our own that the Jewish people have returned to their homeland, the beginning of Ezekiel’s vision, well under way, and inexorably headed toward the spiritual revival of the dry bones [Ezekiel 37]. We do not know all the details, but we are watching and participating in this with great excitement.”
